OUTsmart Magazine Zodiac Illustrations
In 2020, a remarkable opportunity arose when OutSmart, Houston's vibrant LGBTQIA+ magazine, sought my artistic vision for their annual AstroCast report. This eagerly anticipated feature, a cornerstone of their January issue for astrology enthusiasts, presented a unique challenge: to craft a series of illustrations that not only honored the zodiac but also celebrated the dazzling diversity of Houston's LGBTQIA+ community.
My mission was clear: reimagine each of the twelve zodiac symbols through an inclusive lens. Throughout 2020, a new, uniquely interpreted symbol graced the pages of OutSmart, becoming a monthly focal point. Drawing inspiration from my own diverse circle of friends, I meticulously blended intricate zodiac symbolism, elemental motifs, and distinct faces into each piece.
The result was a collection of dreamy, evocative portraits – twelve royal kings and queens of the astral realm, each representing a different astrological element. Readers were invited to discover which spirit resonated with them: perhaps Aries' electric blue horns, Cancer's rose-tinted glasses, or Sagittarius's bow and arrows, poised to unleash hope and love. Ultimately, these illustrations aimed to offer a spirit guide for everyone.
This project stands as a powerful testament to my artistic philosophy: a belief that artistry and inclusivity can profoundly collide, creating visually stunning works imbued with significant cultural meaning.
