Signs of Protest

On Tuesday July 07, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was executed on the streets of East End Houston. I literally cannot describe the fear in my heart for our brothers, sisters, and neighbors after this tragedy. Attending the protest helped me feel empowered and comforted.

At some point I swear none of my senses worked. Staring me in the eyes, looming over the crowd. Was it a cross? Wait, a cross at a barber shop. Nah, not a cross but probably just an old pole and hardware for signage. There it was again. The thought of a hard working man who suffered through winds of a new region only to be crucified in his own neighborhood, his home away from home. Justice for Lorenzo, justice for every one of ICE's targets and families. Justice for the pets that get neglected after ice raids, justice for the children of tomorrow. The world is so beautiful, yet we have modern day monstrosities in our own back yard. There it was again. The thought of anyone you know being next. Your mom, your coworker, your siblings, your best friend, you. I'm so glad I packed my sketchbook. Today's protest felt like a burning starlight.

Time and time again I am reminded that my voice is my best tool for freedom, and if you read this far I bet that your voice can also do wonders. Speak up, stand up for your neighbors, and fight the good fight. DEMMAND justice for Lorenzo. I know that at times we can feel helpless in a situation like this, but the one source of inspiration that I got from this protest was the signage. People being loud and DEMANDING JUSTICE. Here is a link to some signage that I made after the protest. Please, download, share, print, whatever! The one thing I am exceptional good at in this world is design and illustration. As creatives, it is OUR RESPONSIBILITY to create work that resonates with the times. May this series of protest signs help you find your voice. Stay safe, and look out after each other.

Remember, UN PUEBLO UNIDO, JAMAS SERA VENCIDO! (a united town, shall NEVER be beat - not quit the same ring in English, huh)
